Food security and resilience

Location
Lubero Territory, North Kivu

Fish farming, agriculture, and agri-food processing initiatives to strengthen access to sustainable food.

The context

In North Kivu, insecurity and population displacement undermine access to a regular food supply, while a portion of the fish consumed is imported. Producing, preserving, and selling locally strengthens both family nutrition and cooperative income.

What the project does

Fish farming. Development of community ponds, fingerlings from selected strains, locally produced feed, and regular technical monitoring. A pilot site allows for testing the full model within the same perimeter.

Market gardening. Short-cycle crops on small plots, including some terraced plots along ponds, using organic fertilization and water-efficient management.

Processing. Conservation and processing of harvests to limit losses and extend sales periods.

Key milestones

  • Training young women in fish farming in Lubero: six weeks of hands-on practice in community ponds.
  • First fingerlings delivered to the cooperative's pilot site.
  • Group purchasing of feed by cooperatives to secure better prices.

What we aim for

  • A more varied and consistent diet for families.
  • Cooperatives that master their production, from pond to market.
  • Fewer post-harvest losses, thanks to conservation and cold chain infrastructure.

We had been trained before, but no one ever came back. Here, someone stops by every week to check the water and density. The first harvest was sold before it was even taken out of the pond.
